Max Ingrand

Max Ingrand (1908-1969) was born in Bressuire, France. He spent part of his childhood in Chartes and received formal training as a student of Jacques Gruber at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Ingrand first rose to prominence as a stained glass artist, executing numerous commissions to design stained glass windows for various French cathedrals, including the forty-three stained glass windows for the Le Mans Cathedral of Notre-Dame du Pré, which he designed between 1948 and 1952. Other commissions include cathedrals in Washington and Quebec, the Palace of Prince Asaka in Tokyo, and a number of windows for the Château de Chenonceau.
In 1954, Ingrand became the Art Director of Fontana Arte, the renowned Italian glass company. Ingrand worked at Fontana Arte for thirteen years, designing table lamps, chandeliers, and objects, many of which have become icons of mid-century design.
Ingrand’s distinctions include being awarded the French Legion of Honour.
